We marked the end of fighting in Europe in 1945 by joining in the Rickmansworth VE Day event at St Mary's Church on the evening of 8 May, and being at the wonderful Croxley Green 'street party' picnic on 10th May. We'll be at the special Abbots Langley archives day on 12 July as well.

And we'll have a special display in the museum.

We chose the theme 'Feeding the Nation' - or at least, our bit of it. Our 'mission' is to "tell the story of what it was like to live and work round here". We didn't want to present lots of photos of 1945 street parties, but to tell more of the stories, especially about how it felt at the time. So we presented images of some of the newspapers of the time; audio recordings of recollections from people who were there; and some of the advice and directions people were given on 'how to eat' - grow your own, Dig for Victory, cooking economically - even how to set up house.

So on this website, and in our exhibition and displays, we'll be providing information to jog people's memories - or to give an insight into 'what it was like' here at the end of the war.
